Looking into the universe

Bild The extremely sensitive telescope on La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain at 2225 m elevation is able to capture gamma radiation from galaxies up to eight billion lightyears away. With a diameter of 17 meters, this "ear to the universe" is the largest of its kind in the world.

Nearly 1,000 aluminum mirror segments, mounted on support plates, make up 240 m2 of mirror surface. Within 20 seconds the telescope focuses on any point in the sky. To this effect, each of the mirror plates is directed with utmost precision to a predefined laser point by two Carry 12 x 2 ball screws.
